Darth Vader UV-C Wars: Fighting the kitchen ventilation nonsense and the UV-C fat loss myth!
There are legends that just won’t die. One of them is the myth of UV-C technology in commercial kitchen ventilation. Manufacturers and market players tout it as a revolutionary method of fat reduction – but scientific studies say otherwise: most of these promises are nothing more than science fiction!
UV-C: The light or the dark side of the Force?
Just as Anakin Skywalker went from being a noble Jedi knight to Darth Vader in the Star Wars films, UV-C technology has been transformed from a useful medical application to a questionable marketing tool in kitchen ventilation.
There is an alliance of nonsense spreaders in our industry who claim that UV-C can effectively break down fat. But scientists agree: UV-C alone has no effect on fat and ozone only works under very specific conditions – and not very efficiently at that.
What really happens: Hot air instead of real fat elimination
Our new investigations show what UV-C systems really do: they heat the surfaces in the ventilation systems up to 150°C. And what happens to grease at this temperature? It simply evaporates. However, the grease does not magically disappear, it simply settles somewhere else. It is not destroyed, but merely relocated! Nevertheless, this technology is sold with great promises.
The truth about ozone: more harm than good
Another popular buzzword is “ozone”. It sounds fancy, but it hardly does anything. Ozone can neutralize odours, but only with special catalysts, which are installed in very few systems. In addition, ozone can be harmful to health even in low concentrations. So if you use ozone in your kitchen ventilation system, you should know what you are doing – or better still, keep your hands off it.

Don’t be dazzled by fancy marketing terms and false promises. UV-C can be useful in medical technology, but in kitchen ventilation it is mostly just hot air.
