Flame protection filter and flame transmission test

Flame protection filters and flame transmission test according to DIN EN 16282-6: Safety in kitchens and industry. Safety is a key issue in commercial kitchens and in many industrial plants. Fire protection therefore plays a particularly important role. Exhaust air systems in particular must function reliably because they absorb large quantities of aerosols and grease during cooking or production processes. This is precisely where flame protection filters and the flame transmission test in accordance with DIN EN 16282-6 come into play.

What flame-retardant filters must do according to DIN EN 16282-6

Type A flame protection filters are indispensable when it comes to the safe operation of kitchen exhaust air systems. This is because they prevent flames from spreading uncontrollably through the exhaust air system. They also retain grease particles so that no dangerous deposits can form inside the system.

In contrast, type B filters are not certified and are therefore unsafe. They do not provide effective protection against flame penetration and therefore increase the risk of fire. This is why the standard clearly requires the use of tested flame-retardant filters.

Our X-CYCLONE flame-retardant filters meet the requirements of DIN EN 16282-6 and therefore set standards in terms of safety. At the same time, they are designed in such a way that they separate grease efficiently and the separated grease is discharged into collection channels. This reduces the fire load in the entire system.

Standards and requirements: Clarity for greater safety

DIN EN 16282-6 replaces the former DIN 18869-5 and is the binding basis for testing flame-retardant filters. In addition, VDI 2052 supplements important requirements, especially for use above thermal appliances.

The standard specifies that only type A filters are flameproof. Consequently, only these filters may be used above stoves, deep-fat fryers or ovens. This ensures greater safety because potential sources of fire are stopped at an early stage.

This is how the flame transmission test for flame-retardant filters works

The flame transmission test in accordance with DIN EN 16282-6 follows a clear procedure:

  1. Installing the test samples
Two test samples are installed in the test device. Adapters may be used as long as no more than 5 % of the air volume flow bypasses the filter.
  2. Test conditions
The gas burner is set so that the flame height is 800 mm. At the same time, air flows through the system at the flow rate specified by the manufacturer.
  3. Test procedure
The flame is applied to the filter for one minute. During this time, no flame must be visible behind the separator.
  4. Documentation by video
The requirement of the standard is particularly important: “The entire inspection must be recorded by video.”

However, although this requirement is clear, only a few manufacturers publish corresponding recordings. Many providers do not take this very seriously and therefore do not create any real transparency.

Transparency through REVEN: Video recordings visible to everyone

We at REVEN GmbH deliberately go one step further. We record every complete flame transmission test of our X-CYCLONE flame protection filters in accordance with DIN EN 16282-6. We then publish the videos on our REVEN TV YouTube channel.

This allows interested parties to understand exactly how the filters are checked and how they behave in an emergency. This is how we create trust, because we don’t just talk about security, we make it visible.

More than the standard: additional explosion tests

But we don’t stop at the prescribed tests. We also test our filters in explosion scenarios. We simulate how the filters behave in the event of a sudden pressure wave, which can be caused by flammable coolants or lubricants, for example.

The results speak for themselves: our X-CYCLONE flame protection filters withstand even extreme loads. They do not deform and reliably prevent flames or pressure waves from passing through the system in an uncontrolled manner. This results in a level of safety that far exceeds the standard.

Operation and maintenance: mandatory for long-term safety

Consistent maintenance is essential to ensure that the flame protection filters work reliably at all times. This is why VDI 2052 demands clear rules:

  • Daily visual inspection: As soon as grease films are visible, the filters must be cleaned.
  • Regular cleaning and disinfection: Only clean filters offer full protection.
  • Documentation: The condition of the filters must be recorded daily to ensure traceability.

These specifications are not only mandatory, they also ensure that the system retains its value in the long term.

Conclusion: safety without compromise

The flame protection filters and the flame transmission test in accordance with DIN EN 16282-6 are a crucial component for fire protection in kitchens and industrial facilities. Many manufacturers only superficially comply with the standard, whereas REVEN consistently implements all requirements and also ensures transparency.

Our X-CYCLONE flame protection filters offer tested safety, verifiable flame protection and documented quality – for everyone to see. Choosing REVEN means choosing safety without compromise.
