CFD flow simulations in ventilation technology

CFD flow simulations: A decisive step towards optimizing ventilation technology! In a live webinar organized by cci Dialog GmbH and REVEN GmbH, Sven Rentschler, Managing Director of Rentschler REVEN GmbH, part of the SCHAKO Group, gave an exciting insight into the world of CFD flow analyses. Under the moderation of Andreas Graf-Matzner, we discussed how modern numerical flow simulations (CFD) help to increase the efficiency of ventilation systems and clear up misunderstandings in air pollution control.

What are CFD flow simulations and why are they so important?

CFD flow simulations are a powerful tool to accurately analyze airflow in complex environments. Instead of relying on simple graphical representations or “colorful arrows”, as they are unfortunately often used, CFD analyses provide precise results based on physical models. At our SCHAKO Group competence center for CFD in Spain, we work with sophisticated software such as Ansys Fluent to simulate and optimize complex ventilation systems. The knowledge gained from this is essential for product development – whether it’s about concealed ceiling outlets or air flow in commercial kitchens.

Examples from practice

In the webinar, we showed how even small changes to the design of air outlets can dramatically change the flow distribution. The CFD-optimized air outlets from SCHAKO KG are an impressive example. By simulating the air flow, we were able to ensure that the air flows evenly and without undesirable turbulence to the ceiling. We achieved similar success with our X-CYCLONE separator technology, which effectively filters aerosols out of the air.

Another highlight of the webinar was the presentation of our REVEN induction capture hoods. These sophisticated capture devices use induced currents to efficiently extract pollutants. Through CFD analysis, we were able to optimize the operation of these hoods and ensure that the air flows exactly as required for effective pollutant capture.

Why simple flow models often fail

Another key topic was the problem of simplified flow models, which are often used to visualize ventilation systems. These models often convey a false picture of reality. In the webinar, we used examples to explain how easy it is to be deceived by superficial representations. For example, a typical representation of the air flow above hobs or in school classrooms may show beautiful arrows symbolizing the air flow, but these often have nothing to do with the real flow. Such misunderstandings can have fatal consequences in practice, especially when it comes to compliance with air quality standards.

Conclusion: Precision through CFD flow simulations

Numerical flow simulation is an indispensable tool in modern ventilation technology. It enables us to analyze air flows precisely and develop the best solutions for our customers. With the help of CFD, we can not only optimize efficiency and functionality, but also decisively deepen our understanding of the dynamics of air flows. This ensures that our systems, from air outlets to separators, meet the high requirements for air pollution control and ventilation technology.
