The removal of vapors and odors is a complex challenge in ventilation technology and air pollution control. Many people assume that the air should be clean and odorless after the capture, separation and cleaning of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reven.de\/2021\/04\/07\/aerosole\/\" title=\"Aerosols in our environment explained simply\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"239\">aerosols<\/a>. However, the assumption that an odor-free atmosphere in an environment without aerosols, particles and pollutants is a matter of course turns out to be a misconception.     <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-luft-ohne-aerosole-und-mit-dampf-riecht\">Air without aerosols and with vapor smells!  <\/h3>\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s take an everyday example: the smell of petrol or diesel when filling up. Why do we perceive this smell even though there are no visible fuel splashes or aerosols in the air? This becomes particularly clear when we fill the tank to the brim and make sure that nothing overflows. The nose is close to the filler neck and the smell of the fuel is intensely noticeable &#8211; even without any liquid escaping. A particle measurement in the immediate vicinity of the filler neck would not detect any fuel aerosols in the air.      <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-warum-riecht-luft-auch-ohne-aerosole\">Why does air smell even without aerosols?<\/h3>\n\n<p>The smell comes from vaporized liquids that have turned to gas. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reven.de\/2020\/01\/10\/filtern-oder-abscheiden-von-fett-und-oel-aerosolen-im-abluftstrom\/\" title=\"Filtering or separating grease and oil aerosols in the exhaust air flow?\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"240\">exhaust air stream does not contain droplets and aerosols<\/a>, but gaseous liquids that require special attention.
